Hip- and knee osteoarthritis
This used to be popularly called wear and tear. However, this term does not quite cover it. Osteoarthritis is the degeneration of cartilage.

Contrary to what is suggested with wear and tear (wear and tear occurs through use), movement is actually something that should be encouraged with osteoarthritis. There has been a change in the joint, but it is not worn out. A joint connects two bones. On the ends of those bones is a layer of cartilage. That layer is very smooth so the joints can easily bend, twist or stretch.
In osteoarthritis, the layer of cartilage has become thinner. This can result in inflammation only this is not always the case. Research has shown that there is no relationship between radiologically visible osteoarthritis and the amount of symptoms experienced. The symptoms experienced with osteoarthritis are mainly morning and onset pain and stiffness. These symptoms diminish as you move for more than 10-15 minutes or have started the day.
The physiotherapists at Physiotherapy & Training Amsterdam can help you improve and/or maintain mobility, strength, balance and coordination, taking into account movement patterns and functional disorders. Good muscle strength and stability reduces pressure within a joint, resulting in a reduction of symptoms.
